Hey, I never thought much of this poem either...UNTIL I heard Gwendolyn reading it out loud. You have to listen to the audio and the way she streeetches out and savors each syllable and creates this crazy beat. It's a fantastic poem. (Report) Reply

Danyelle's comment about the 'Jazzy June' meaning to sleep around is completely wrong.
Here's a link to audio of Brook's herself dismissing that statement: http: //www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15433 (Report) Reply

Such a very important message sent here, and in such a small format. Brooks continues to amaze me as I continue to read. (Report) Reply

I believe this poem is short and sweet. It gives you everything you need to know in a couple of lines. The truth of the lines is not hidden, nor hard to figure. It is like a cycle of the wrong choices, which is indicated in every line. However, it is the last stanza that gets you.' We die soon.' All the wrong choices lead to an inevitable death that we all have to face, but this poem gives the grimy life and its consequences. Truly an inspiration. I also don't believe that this is just fixated on young men. Young women make wrong choices too! ! (I am a young woman though-) (Report) Reply

I believe that this poem is about young men that are tring to identify themselves while making wrong choices. They droped out of school, and hung out late. They found themselves in trouble, drinking alcohol and endulged in several other sins. Eventally after being recognized as The cool one's they Jazz June, which means to sleep around. This life style is what lead to them dying young. (Report) Reply

This poem is describing the age old saying 'too cool for school'. It is talking about kids (most likely popular kids) who think they are so cool that they left school. The line 'we lurk late' is describing how they stay out late and probably get into trouble. They also mention gin which implies that they drink and like Jazz music as well. The last line of the poem says that they die soon. This is due to their poor judgment and lack of discipline. (Report) Reply

I believe that this poem captures our people in the state of mind that we were in then, and we are definitely still there. I know it is going to be a struggle to reach everyone and pull them out of that mind frame but if I can help one I believe that will help many! ! ! ! (Report) Reply

I like that she was being thoughtful by asking the boys aren't you guys supposed to be at school. Then thought about writing a poem called we real cool. (Report) Reply
