Well, I Try Poem by Tillie Watkins

Well, I Try

This is great!
Well, I try.
You're so great!
Well, I try.
You write so great!
Well, I try.
Don't sell yourself short, you do, not try!

What do you want me to say?
It's true, I try.
Should I say
It's not? I'm not? I don't?
Don't be silly, sure it is! You are! You do!
This is why I say I try.
To me, it's not. But I try.
To me, I'm not. But I try.
To me, I don't. But I try.
I want it to be. I want to be. I want to.
So I try.
I don't think it is yet. I don't think I am yet. I don't think I do yet.
But I want to think it.
And so I try.
And I want to.
So I try.

Don't sell yourself short, you do, not try!
Well, I'll try.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Depression makes you hate yourself.
Nobody else seems to hate you.
But you do.
They tell you not to.
And even if you don't love you, you love them.
So you try.
