What Do You Do When You Break Your Own Heart Poem by Prince ....

What Do You Do When You Break Your Own Heart

My heart’s been broken many times
by many heartless peoples.
Except this time.
This time where I rip my own heart
from it’s cavity and
crush it under the weight of my own palms.

My lips have betrayed me
with a kiss of mutiny.
How I wish these lips found yours
instead of that strange pair.
That strange pair that didn’t match mine.
That wasn’t soft,
or skilled,
or caring,
or perfect.
That pair that was nothing like the pair
that used to belong to me.

You told me I had your heart
but I find that hard to believe.
For if it were in fact mine
you wouldn’t want it back so easily.
So I come to understand
that it was just a fraction,
just a part of what I could’ve had.
And I don’t know I guess I’m glad
that I never got to feel it’s whole beat
because I couldn’t bear to lose it’s heat.

So what do I do now,
that I’ve broken my own heart.
Do I move on or cool it off?
Do I concentrate on what matters or do I give in to defeat?
Do I prove you wrong or admit your right?

I haven’t figured that part out as of yet
but until then it’s pretty much a bet that
I’m going to stay here trying to piece together
the shards of an iced heart.
