I don't know what it means
The old highway winding toward Platina
A big summer moon rising on it all,
I don't know what it means
The slack creek falling through
Worn granite inclines toward Cottonwood,
Or the dirt side-road
Where vultures scare up
Pecking a flattened coyote
Twenty miles west of Red Bluff-
What does it signify?
The abandoned farmhouse
With its blue Wedgewood tipped over,
Stables empty-
What does it mean?
Mute radio in drizzled hills
The mouldy blue trailer outside Bridgeville,
Whence goes the fairytale
That shimmers now like a dream,
A faraway land in a faraway time-
Whatever did it mean?
