What Happens In America Poem by Milind Padki

What Happens In America

You buy groceries, supplies rather, to keep
The mortal coil together. This can include
Wrap-around sunglasses
To make you look nubile.

At the doorstep of the liquor-shop, you
meet this black prostitute who looks
genuinely happy to see you. Already under
some influence, she now asks for a couple dollars
For a drink, and on second thoughts, says
How about you and me have some fun? .

Upon paying her those two dollars and
mumbling an excuse, you go, alone, to
A Schwarzenegger movie, where the plot is
Lumpy and hackneyed: molten metal
Turns killer twenty times. Schwarz looks
Old.

You come home. You drink cheap
Port on a dirty linoleum, the whole
tableau vivant for a budding poet.
You write a poem. This one.
