What I Was Taught! Poem by sharon kubeck

What I Was Taught!

What I was taught!

What I was taught as young child has shattered my hopes and dreams,
I was taught that charity beings at home not some foreign country.

I was taught that marriage was sacred and bonds not to be broken,
To walk away without any remorse, to mumble and curse!

To raise a perfect family with children, husband and wife,
Seems like it has been long forgotten in most people's life!

To help someone who is down and has nowhere to go.
Why must we close the doors for opportunity and just say no!

To feed the hungry and give them shelter a place to live,
Who really cares in this country and who really don't give!

I was taught that beauty is in your heart and within,
The TV brainwashes everyone must be beautiful and thin!

I was taught the right of freedom and the right to speak,
Now it is taken away never to stand on our own two feet!

I was taught to forgive people who did you wrong,
Now everyone is suing each other doesn't take long!

Now you can't say the Lord's Prayer in school,
Speak out of term against someone to be arrested!

I was taught to always give a helping hand,
Not to turn your cheek and it's all about me!
