What My Mother Looked Like
I can't remember
What my mother looked like
That was so long ago
In a time of chasing butterflies
And childhood friends
Whose faces I can still see
When I close my eyes
I can't remember
What my mother looked like
But I can still recall
My dog Rex
As he jumped around me
When we played together
On the steps of my house
I can't remember
What my mother looked like
But I do remember my sister
With her beautiful smile
And loving way she helped me
Get through my younger days
I can't remember
What my mother looked like
But I do remember
My father's anger
And how his hands
Fell hard upon me
When he felt I needed it
I can't remember
What my mother looked like
But I can remember
How unmoved I was
When I heard my father died
I felt almost... relieved
There are many things
I can remember
And many things
I have chosen to forget
But after seventy-five years
Of life upon this earth
I still can't remember
What my mother looked like
