What thou lov’st well, said Ezra Pound,
remains, the rest is dross;
opinion that appears so sound
it hardly needs a gloss.
What thou lov’st well shall not be reft
of thee, the Pisan sage
went on to say; it has the heft
that holds a heritage.
Yet I will gloss these two brief verses,
for he who does not add
to others’ thoughts of love reverses
the poet's message pad
by merely echoing his lines.
I’ll say that love has greater
power than the vintage wines
in Euphronios’s krater.
Inspired by Ezra Pounds's Canto LXXXI.
