When Broken Bones Speak Poem by Chinonye J. Chidolue

When Broken Bones Speak

Rating: 5.0

Better in time or the finest hope for the worst?
That once it were as rosy as the flower beds in summer
As green and proud as the rancher's plantation
As merry as the early morning's chirping birds
As juicy as the rose buds that blossom in spring
But it all ends that it all begins…..

From the nudity of the seductive night
When lovers savor the darkness of the moonlight
And children shudder at the hooting sound of owls
The coming together of families to renew their vows
And the raging storm of the cracked households
In the wee hours of the morn, a soul wanders in emotions
A heart beats in pain, sadness slowly creeps in
Another sleepless night, dark hours of bitter memories

The body stays still but the heart races on
Lifeless, in search of the life it once survived on
The heart pushes but the head clings on its pride
For time hath not healed but nature had taken just side
Back to back, two worlds apart, counting the hours to dawn
Like cowards in fear of confrontations!
Slowly she speaks; letting out soft lamentations…

"Where is the love? " tears effortlessly slipping
"Suddenly our love bed has turned to a mocking circus
Kissing my bruises yet leaving me with deeper cuts
Soaking my tears up and piercing me some more all over…

"Where is the love? " That once you swore to protect forever
Cutting my wings that I may never stand up to you
Breaking my feet that I may crawl to my doom
Like an eagle, you flaunt your wings up in the sky
Strong as iron rods, you trudge your feet upon my back
This rock! Once a waterfall surrounded with olive trees
On it you clenched! Drinking thirstily on bended knees
With every downpour, your desires you confessed
And when the torrents went high, your deceit made manifest
Drinking up my last for the pleasures of your foul desires…

Run! Run! Your voice whispers, "I'll let you run if you can"
For you knew a broken feet could never reach the ground
On my belly I crawled and on my back a heavy sound thundered!
"Shush", your malicious voice fired…..
The click-clacks of dismantling bones, disjointed joints
Tissues slashed out, ankles twisted, broken loins………

Better in time or the finest hope for the worst?
When broken bones speak, may they find in them life
When broken bones speak, may they exude healing
When broken bones speak, may they declare forgiveness
When broken bones speak, may they be made whole once again!
For it all ends that it all begins…..

Beautiful depiction of distress, disappointments, abuses, and tragedies experienced in once blissful relationships, well articulated and elegantly penned in poetic diction with conviction. An expository piece of poetry that pays tribute to all victims and survivors of domestic violence insightfully penned from heart. Thanks for sharing Chinonye. Please read my poem MANDELA - THE IMMORTAL ICON.
