When Darkness Comes Poem by Jan E Smith

When Darkness Comes

Can you say I didn't make an effort
to live life as others say to do?
No one can say I didn't try to act the way
you told me to.

Yet darkness comes and covers me
and holds me close and tight.
It robs my soul of feelings as the
day turns into night.

The numbness that encompasses me
with moments that pass by...
Is yet another's reality, their thoughts,
their reasons and lies.

How long can I endure this pain?
How long must I try?
When there is nothing left to gain
and I see no reason why.
