When I Was Little... Poem by Forever Underestimated

When I Was Little...

When I was little...
I wanted to be black
So I'd feel less guilt about slaves.
I wanted to be fat
Just to see who were my real friends.
I wanted to be perfect
Because I wanted to be special.
I wanted to be older
So I'd be treated like someone with a brain.
I wanted to have a little brother
So I could teach him everything.
I wanted to dye my hair
Because I wanted to stand out.
I wanted to be a hero
So people would look at me and be proud.
I wanted to rush through life
Because it was all so slow.
I wanted to live on my own
So my parents would take me seriously.
I wanted people to listen
Because they never seemed to understand.
I NEVER wanted to be normal
Because I liked living in my own world.
I wanted to marry Prince Charming
Because I wanted life to be a story.
I wanted to be my brother
Just to see what it was like.
I wanted to be popular
So I'd be accepted.
I wanted to be rich
So I could get away from it all.

And, you know what?
In so many ways, I've changed.
But, in so many ways,
I'm the same.
What do you think?
