When We Stopped Feasting, New Year Ball Drop Was Just Over Poem by NHIEN NGUYEN MD

When We Stopped Feasting, New Year Ball Drop Was Just Over

We are so happy to have guests come to our home
On this very cold day, just about 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
Temperature has dropped very cold this week.
Yesterday morning, snow fell with accumulation of one half foot.
Today, thick snow still covers everywhere
My snow white yard is bordered by surrounding evergreen hedges.
It took several hours of traveling by highways
But now our guests have arrived safely.
Most of food and drink had been set up on dining table
We turned high our stove to create blackened fresh crunchy shrimps.
We also stir fried sliced beef which emitted steaming aroma
After ten minutes, we were ready to sit down for our feast.
We greeted each other with our drinks
And we had a very good time together.
We had another meal several hours later
This time we feasted on steamed crabs and clams.
We were so involved in our conversation
When we stopped to watch new year ball drop, it was just over.

Above is English version of the Vietnamese poem of NHIEN NGUYEN MD:

MẢI VUI ĂN UỐNG, GIAO THỪA ĐÃ QUA

Mừng thay khách tới thăm nhà
Hôm nay lạnh lắm chỉ vừa mười lăm.
Tuần này trời lạnh căm căm
Sáng qua tuyết đổ khoảng gần gang tay.
Hôm nay tuyết vẫn phủ dầy,
Sân nhà tuyết trắng, thông xanh bốn bờ.
Đường xe mấy tiếng đồng hồ
Nhưng giờ khách đã tới nơi an toàn.
Đồ ăn thức uống sẵn sàng
Vặn cao lò nóng, xào lăn tôm dòn
Xèo xèo bò chín khói thơm
Chỉ trong mười phút chúng tôi ngồi bàn.
Cụng ly, tiệc khách bắt đầu
Anh em đoàn tụ vui ngày cuối năm.
Thế rồi chỉ mấy giờ sau
Chúng tôi ăn tối, nghêu cua tiệc này.
Đêm nay chờ đón giao thừa
Mải vui ăn uống, giao thừa đã qua.
