Winter On The Island. Poem by William Fay

Winter On The Island.

Wait sadness. I know tonight you must come,
But wait. Let me hide like the sleepy owl,
Until day's end, silent in the warm barn,
In the summer tree. O falling leaf at dusk,
Departing bird,

Let me recall the serene drone of the bee,
Returning home, or the swaying of flowers
In wild grass through the ageless evenings.
Let me recall the sun yesterday, and a boat

Tied to the leafy riverbank. My door is open,
The curtain closed. Now wait sadness in rooms,
Where no candle will burn, where clock's stop,
And I shall fall quiet like snow upon your flesh;

To yearn always, through your long winter night,
For her return, like lost summer, like morning light.
