Winter's Solace Poem by Jackie Allen

Winter's Solace

Over the chilled landscape
the flakes flutter slowly and softly,
laying down a blanket of purest white~
ah, such striking beauty
no two flakes ever the same.

But heavy is my heart of longing
for you, who now lies so low
in the cold and hardened ground.

Blanketed with a heavy coat of snow
the earthen mound lies silent
even as I join the wind’s mournful song.
Still I stoop low and reluctantly
toss in the final piece of earth.

As sparkling and icy crystals fall,
my hot tears mingle as melting
silver shards of glass.

Ah, so heavy is my heart of grief!
I long for a final sweet embrace
and another glimpse of you.
Instead I now sit by the glowing fire
watching the embers rise and fall,

A reflection of our life together.
Still your photo looks back at me
with eyes unknowing.

Weary and wearing a cumbersome
cloak of despairing darkness
I climb the steep stairs
into the outstretched arms of the night
filled with waiting dreams.

Ever so thankful,  am I, to be covered
with a memory blanket of
winter’s solace and you.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Cold, ever so cold is the grief, yet warmed by a blanket of memories, the Voice travels along a path, the end not quite yet in sight. Though comforted by moments of thanksgiving for, the time she had with her beloved, it nevertheless, her heart carries a heavy burden..
