Woman Washing Clothes Poem by Gladwin Emmanuel

Woman Washing Clothes

A woman washing clothes
in the neighborhood

a day carved in grey

clatter as fabric smack stunned stone
a toiling bullock, a stray dog

unruffled pigeons on the sun shade; all meditate
granites, flats, chambers, shrubs; all stock-still

on a drab day carved in grey
