You Have Gone Poem by Larry Houston

You Have Gone

You have gone
and the sparrows don't sing from the trees anymore
and a lawnmower starts in the distance
tequila and limes
the closest I'll come
to the taste of your mouth on the beach
and your scent fades away,
leaving nothing to fill what you left
if I had known
I would have woken you early
with coffee the way that you like
held you close, stroked your hair
taking time to remember each second, the rise and fall of your breath
sleepy eyes
the small smile just for me
and a lawnmower sounds in the distance
and I would never have answered the door
but I did
and I'll never see you again
and the sparrows don't sing from the trees anymore
