You+i=0 Poem by Joan Marques

You+i=0

I wonder where it's hazier:
Outside in the gloomy mist,
Or in my heart, where the knowledge eats at me
That our days are counted
And that you, the greater people pleaser between us,
Will leave the decision up to me
While we both see that what's left
Is nothing more than a spineless acquaintanceship
That once was passionate love
And a vision of eternal togetherness;
But got robbed from its substance
By time, ties, aging, human transformation
And unavoidable attempts to maintain our dignity.
It feels strange inside.
As if a loved one has passed
But I know all that's wrong
Is that we didn't last
And that the most valuable lesson from this may be
That what seems like your life today
May be nothingness tomorrow...
