You Surely Lag Behind Poem by Francis Duggan

You are lucky since you've not known a moment of self doubt
And by the hard punches of life you've not been knocked about
But don't be cocky in your mind your blessings you should count
Of luck in life you've known a share and of it a big amount
And no need for you to be arrogant, smug and self satisfied
Just feel happy that you have got good health and lady luck is on your side
The poor young man in the wheelchair luck with him did not stay
Knocked down by a motor car on a pedestrian crossing that's life as some do say
A near death experience that left him as a paraplegic he was lucky to survive
He does not feel smug or arrogant just happy to be alive,
A drunken driver's error has left him in a wheelchair
But you will never hear him say that life can be unfair
And despite all he has been through he is happy in his mind
In attitude to life of one such as he you surely lag behind.
