Young Jimmy The Poet Poem by Francis Duggan

Young Jimmy The Poet

Rating: 2.5

The trouble with young Jimmy is that he falls for flattery
And he's convinced that he is special a Prince of Poetry
When his mates tell him how good his poems are he believes all they say
And he feels assured that glory from him cannot be far away.

When his mates tell him he is a great talent they only lead him on
They say Jimmy what a poet you are and laugh when he has gone
But the genuine poetry critic will point out your flaws to you
And he has yet to learn that not what all you hear is true.

His girl friend blond haired Linda she is only twenty three
And she looks quite attractive and one year younger than he
For her he pens love verses and she tells him your poems are like the flowers
And I could read your verses for hours and hours and hours.

And though Linda is quite genuine when she says to him how great
She is nowhere near a literary expert and her opinions don't hold any weight
And he so full of big ideas believes he is a man of note
But he is not the only poetaster for to proclaim himself a poet.

Suppose you must promote yourself life nowadays seems that way
And Jimmy to his mates says I will know great fame one day
And they not genuine people with him don't disagree
And he craving attention laps up their flattery.

They call him 'Young Jimmy The Poet' and he loves his nickname
And he pens verses to his Linda and he dreams of literary fame
And though Jimmy as a writer is convinced he'll make the grade
I do recall a wise old saying that poets are born not made.
