Young Tom Poem by Colin Ian Jeffery

Young Tom

Rating: 5.0

Only fifteen, lied about age
Telling recruiting sergeant he was eighteen
Joined infantry and went to war
Fell in Flanders crossing no-man's land
Machine-gunned making a bayonet charge.

Died in shell hole crying for his mother
Knowing his death would destroy her
Grieving her heart without repose
Cursing the day he became a soldier
Lied about his age to join the colours.
