Sheri Brown Poems

I remember in the day
boldly auditioning for ballet.

Was told, 'good but body a negro shape.'
...

I see my Father in me; expressive, full of splendor,
real, revolutionary; I am my Father's daughter.
How can I deny Your majesty, Your creation
without denying my own existence?
...

When I am with you, I am giddy, youthful, like
savoring expensive dark chocolate; I'm satisfied.
Smiling from ear to ear just looking at you.
There's never a dull moment with you; exciting.
...

A new America, it's time for a change.
Blood, sweat and tears for many years;
will we ever eliminate old baggages and fears?
Visualize it, the bigger picture.
...

I do what I do is extraordinary indeed
I can birth a man child
and raise him right you see.

Deliver Us From Evil

I remember in the day
boldly auditioning for ballet.

Was told, 'good but body a negro shape.'
What's a negro shape? Can we debate?

Tried out for another part-
now told, 'you are too dark.'

God, You've created me to be free
why can't others see all of me?

Talented, confident, a dream
fought hard to make the scene.

Judge me for what I can do
no way I'll play a coon.

Back then we hoped for the best
although living among the rest.

Tired of the centerfolds
causing women to lose their souls.

Reality check, healthy don't mean fat
now women kill to look like that.
