There must be some way out of here, said the joker to the thief, There’s too much confusion, I can’t get no relief. Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth, None of them along the line know what any of it is worth.
No reason to get excited, the thief, he kindly spoke, There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke. But you and i, we’ve been through that, and this is not our fate, So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.
All along the watchtower, princes kept the view While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl, Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

This lyric and It's Alright Ma are two of my favourite lyrics.
I read once that Bob woke up with this lyric after having dreamt it and was writing it down and someone knocked on his door and interupted him. He got up to tell him to go away and when he sat down to read it again the words had flown! A similar story to another unfinished poem Xanadu by Coleridge.
Great that it was finished in a way by Jimi Hendrix and turned into the definitive version everyone knows.

I just watched the special last night on Jimi and am very curious what he based the song watch tower on. i know on the special, which opened up my eyes to what a neat guy Jimi was, he stated he wrote purple haze after having a dream that he was walking under the ocean. I wondered if watch tower was aslo based on a dream. Anyone know? It is my favorite song. I live near where Jimi is buried and go and see his grave a lot. I feel sorry that he died so young. I wish he was here today.
