One night when I was walking home,
Beneath the moonlit trees,
The shadows danced their eerie dance,
Behind the silent breeze,
The night was long and lonely,
And the wolves on yonder shore,
Spent their voice (as if they only) ,
Knew the unrest all men bore.
As I walked with want and sadness,
A certain peace within me came,
Unburdened all my cares; sent gladness,
Even tho my day was pain.
Then I hurried on my journey,
With unfettered heart and mind,
Feeling now that Holy Presence,
So secret yet so sublime.
