On a sleepy suburban street
Lined with many shady trees
I sat on my porch relaxing…
Enjoying the summer breeze
Suddenly, without a warning
Police cars blur as they accelerate
Following closely… one after another
Speeding at an excessive rate
A rare sight… my heart pounds
Screeching brakes… turning at the light
In my mind I map the fading siren sounds
Suddenly silence… what ended the flight?
The newspaper reported the very next day
Dealings with a fugitive…an escaping man
The story explained what led to the display
A fleeing bank robber… the chase began
Speeding on main roads…passing traffic on route
The clever thief decided to dodge defeat
Determined law enforcers followed in hot pursuit
Weaving through quiet residential side streets
The escapee came to an abrupt and crashing halt
Fortunately his injuries were not life threatening
Sadly, unauthorized withdrawals from a bank vault
Have consequences… plenty of time for regretting
