A Devoted Infant's Lullaby Poem by Purusottam Chuli

A Devoted Infant's Lullaby

An ignorant infant
Like me prays
For learning, O Mother!
Saraswati-Bhagavati!
Bestow me wisdom
Having clad in white lotus.

Bestow mercy upon me
Unqualified sans attachment,
O conquerer of illusions!
Let me lead pious life
Humming thy name
In association with pious lives.

Treat none inferior
On this Earth
Remember,
God is omnipresent.

Ever eager to vision God Almighty
Alas! unable to see Him yet;
Ignoble things do I see and act -
Is it thy will, O conquerer of hearts!
To entangle me in things heinous?

Invoke thou at dawn-dust
And in the glowing evening
And also in the dead of night;
Not knowing when thy benign Grace
Would be showered on my heart
And thou turn into an intimate friend of mine!

Never will be lessened
Thy basket of grace in the event
I am grown Gopabandhu;
Grace me do my duty
Chanting thy name ever,
Forgetting things aforesaid never.
In hot summer come
Months of May and June;
Doth ripen extreme hot
mango-jackfruit and others.

All the lessons I will learn
By heart by the grace of
Goddess of wisdom;
May thou bless me
To mould generations to come,
Leaving no stone unturned.

Be kind, O Lord Jagannath!
May I sing thy glory for ever
Let this life of mine be spent chanting
Thy name sans seeking my fame.

Neither do I beg an elephant
Nor do I wish to be an autocrat
Residing within my heart, O Krishna!
Lead me on the path of truth ever
And devote me to my Mother India.

Know not I rituals nor fasting
Invoking only thou, O Jagannath!
Do my work for improving environment
Like a naive Odian of Odisha soil.

As medicine is required
For healing
So is devotion essential
For divine invoking.

Complete tomorrow's work
Sincerely today;
Liberate soul reciting
The preceptor's sermon.

The spinsters with fried
And small rice in autumn
Worship Goddess Khudurukuni
With devoted salutation.

The preceptor is Brahma-
Vishnu-Shiva in one
Prostrate the living Supreme
Soul time and again.

Think of home as a temple
And obtain rest;
God visits eagerly
That home to get the rest.

No matter you take food
Either at home or a party
Recite God's name ever
Before taking thy food.

Having seen the sandal
Pasted blue form of God
Fixed are eyes on the divine
Form without winking.

The moment you remain
Simple abhoring chicanery
Divine power will be bestowed
Upon you for noble deed.

Glory to Lord Jagannath,
The Lord of the universe;
Let thy mercy be showered
On me enabling myself to chant
His name and work for ever
With wisdom as well as acumen.

While being hung in a swing,
Lord Jagannath takes
Immense pleasure
In the dance of Gotipua.

Consumption is for one's self
Sacrifice is for inner self.

Beautiful is crown-like cap,
So doth chariot Nandighosh
With its most elegant deity
Jagannath; sister Subhadra
laughs in Debadalan as the eldest
Balabhadra charms Taladhvaj.

O Almighty! Show me the right path;
Make me wise, hale and hearty;
I bow to thy lotus feet
Round the clock.

O magnificent Kalia! Bind me with your rope
Of devotion to thy Grand Temple;
Allow me to woship and take
The great offering ‘Abadha'
And wander thy abode gleefully.

With beautiful smiling
In His colourful mouth
Doth come Lord Kalia
Swaying in the Car Festival.

Wherever there resides
Conscience in one's heart;
There remains prosperity-
Victory-happiness-rest-truth.

Sans thou I feel no joy;
Only remorse;
With thy living touch and bliss
My heart hops.

Settle the mind
With learning and work
Thou shall be blessed
By Lord Jagannath.

God will bestow mercy
As he doth to the poor;
Forget not, mercy is the
Noblest quality for all of us.

Give prosperity
And prestige me, Lord!
Give power to keep patience
To grin and bear it.

Let us be a leader
Like Subhas Chandra Bose;
Let us fight for the Motherland
Forgetting own vested interest.

There unfurls flag
To redeem the poor
At the Grand Temple-summit;
Let us visit the temple and bow
To the lotus feet of Lord Jagannath,
Subhadra and Balaram.

There unfurls flag to redeem
The distressed and poor for ever;
Let us visit the Ananda Bazar
And take unserved rice and Dal.

Greatest is the digit nine
To be the best, study fine.

Lucky one never cares
for fear nor suffers;
Visit the abode of Lord Vishnu
serving only His lotus feet.

Serve the parents
And the elders ever
Give up evil design
And work for ever.

Sincerity doth have its own reward;
Brilliance par excellence brings honour.

No one is immortal
On this world-stage;
Time will even, after acting
Meet its own doomsday.

Like a living deity doth Baladev gets
Worshipped at Kendrapara;
For he killed Kandarasura
Wielding His awful plough.

Read the immortal works of
Diwan Fakir Mohan Senapati
And get the knowledge about rules
And principles of feudal society.

Description of thy glory causes
A great sensation in me;
Who can comprehend thy play?
O endless Supreme Soul!

Make me a perfomer giving only
One part of thy sixteen parts;
Engage me thy name and work
Residing thou in my heart.

He who lives with noble men
Makes his life noble;
Only with close contact of noble men
Divine form is realized.

Worship and pray God as Hari-
Buddha-Sai- Allah or Christ;
Recitation of God's any of
His names will end our sorrow.

Forgiveness is no cowardice
But divine quality;
It knows no decay
It is magnanimity.

Concentrate on Lord
Jagannath without fear
And remain as lotus leaf
Maintaining balance.

Don't think of profit and loss
While serving the distressed;
Get service-bliss in the event
The needy have got your service.
