A Drunk Couple On The Mississsippi, New Years Poem by Joshua Bantum

A Drunk Couple On The Mississsippi, New Years

She was about your height
and the absence of light
made her black against the city night

She kissed him correctly
a mistake I've always made.
For I always kissed you with love
instead of friendship
which lasts longer,
but neither lasts forever

And the couple left eventually
as I saw them esacape the river
but your shadow stayed
as it breathed old life into a renewed dream

I waited a dreadful year for your call
all the while making solace with your old lovers
With mine
With myself, as best as possible.

I waited for your shadow to rest with the sunset
turning it to darkess, in my home
where sight leads you nowhere
and hope finds rest at headstones of youths imagination.

But here you are
a symbol of potent life
one bread through the years
which dies with every shot
A bit more
fades less with each beer

But every time I'm alone
your eternity of heart
is an accomplice to my fear

A fear of all that's evil
And a love of all that's pure.
