A Haunting Deja Vu Poem by Justin Mata

A Haunting Deja Vu

Anxiously willing to present your heart as an award
To the first person willing to accept it
You give it away to the least likely candidate
And the moment it leaves your hands
Everything turns lifeless and cold

Betrayed by an actor so incredibly talented at lying
So undeserving, yet so believable
Winning your trust and waiting patiently to break it
Your desperate heart led you into a trap
Where you're left broken and alone

Every night crying relentlessly till sleeping
Waking only to find that nothing has changed
How could what seemed so promising, have been so fake
Anger strikes next, lying and deceiving
Convincing you that the blame is in your hands

Now you regret ever opening up at all
Swearing never to do it again
You rekindle your badly broken heart and lock it away
You bury it so deep in your chest
It's beat becomes as faint as a whisper

Painful memories are but dreams now
You've overcome all vulnerabilities
Making sure that you heart is still locked away tight, you try again
You've found someone new, so innocent and trusting
Willing to do whatever it takes to make you happy

Things are better this time, different this time
No more hurt, no more pain
You're in control of how it all turns out
But there's a haunting deja vu to this scene
Why does it seem like you've done this before

A quick glance in a mirror reveals
An actor so incredibly talented at lying
So undeserving yet so believable
Winning other's trust and waiting patiently to break it
Still trying to hide their own scars

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Wow, you lay out some real pain in these words of a scarred, too trusting heart. Good read, glad I stopped by.
