A Heart Is Still A Heart Poem by JAMES T. ADAIR

A Heart Is Still A Heart

The young regard the old
with necessary suspicion
but if the young knew
what the old have felt
they'd better understand
their true condition:
That a heart is just a heart
that beats with regular beat
but it beats a little faster
when another makes it feel less alone
cherished, loved, understood and known
cared for or more complete
this simple unseen muscle
we call a heart
feels pain and sadness
and knows when we're falling apart
One heart we were given
only one
and sometimes it becomes undone
grows so isolated and cold
we think we have none
Regardless of its age the heart can always feel
and inside it knows of our true feelings real
and these feeling have remained mosty the same
through youth and middle age and old, they are unchanged
the heart tries to keep its dreams
long after they are broken
and the last words of kindness and love have been spoken
A heart knows nothing about age
and only dreams of love
