A Letter To Ann Poem by Mitchell Hood

A Letter To Ann

Dearest Ann, I fear this may be the last I write
I would give up all I had to be in your arms tonight
They're sending me to the front at dawn's first light
To see you again, I will fight the hardest I can fight
I want to tell you I love you, Ann, even amidst all this sorrow
And that I'll be the bravest I can for you although I dread tomorrow
Give Maggie a kiss for me asthough nothing's wrong
And tell Jr. I miss him but he has to be strong
I've seen horrible things in these last few months, Ann
Smelled burning flesh, heard the screams of a dying man
I want to come home to you and kiss you again
I miss you so much, Baby. I can't take the pain
But if I never come back to you, you needn't be scared
Because I'll be watching over you, I'll always be there
I'll be the warm light from the window as you lay in our bed
I'll be the summer breeze that dries the tears you have shed
I'll be forever in your heart so you don't have to cry
I'll be what makes you smile as you look to the sky
I'll put your picture in my pocket tomorrow before I go to war
so that just for a moment, it feels like you're with me once more
And to see your ardent smile one more time before I meet my end
For once, for all, forever: Your loving husband, Ben
