A Lovely Office On The Hilltop Poem by Charlene Chan

A Lovely Office On The Hilltop

Surrounded by trees and dashing cars,
stood a low-rise building,
new, on the highest spot of the campus.

In the bright corridors,
found groups of freshmen amazed
by the creativity and technology
of the new building
which will turn into their second home in a week.

Rooms packed with students,
desks covered with name lists,
bins flooded with trash,
overwhelming.

It is noisy
with the bangs from doors shutting and opening
the shuffling footsteps of derbies and heels,
and the drilling of walls from downstairs.

But it is peaceful
with light music from the orchestra rehearsal,
human speech echoing,
and laughter.

A happy girl sits in the large office,
sips from her cup of freshly brewed Nespresso,
stares at the two hands of the clock that runs too fast today,
enjoys her last day at the office on the hilltop.
