A New Day. Poem by Michael Walker

A New Day.

Rating: 5.0

('Make it new'. Ezra Pound) .

When my fig tree is sprouting green leaves
and the lone camellia has budding pink flowers
and the trees are in blossom on the grass verges
of the sidewalks where I go for a run:

When strangers on the run greet me like friends
and someone assists me at the pump of a petrol station;
When I see rowers practicing in boats of fours and eights
on the Whanganui river near the old railway bridge downstream,

Which has been converted to a car-pedestrian one
and cars and people on foot are flowing across it
in the brighter late afternoon light of October,
I know that spring is announcing itself.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I observed all this on a long run a few days ago, then later on driving the car. In structure, I made one periodic sentence, with subordinating conjunctions 'when', 'which' and the main clause in the last line.

Thanks a lot for noticing the main features of the poem, including 'the sweet flow', which I was not so aware of myself.

The flow of the poem is quite fascinating, the landscape that the poem seeks to paint is as awesome as the action that is taking place in a placid manner. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece.

I realize now that there must be a good flow (rhythm) to the poem. I do think that the surrounding landscape is quite picturesque too. Thanks for such an accurate comment.
