A Pain That Never Dies Poem by Alexander Downie

A Pain That Never Dies

You say words that tell yourself you’re alright, but your eyes can't lie.
repeat it again and again and again, hide the pain that never dies.
2 - 4 - 7 - 20 years, uttering words of hurt, your lips tremble in fears and whys,
words soften and slow, your dirty dancing again, with the pain that never dies.

Your body shrinks with every sad sentence and your world becomes 1000 alibis,
your eyes look around for compassionate comfort, trying to tame, the pain that never dies.
For a few short moments your not alone, safe, surrounded by others sad eyes,
a glass of wine, a hug, a long drive home to a lonely bed to face, the pain that never dies.
