A Promise Poem by Azul Noir

A Promise

A chance encounter thrills us
A first date, first kiss, first fight follows
I change, you change and we grow
With change the widening gap starts to show

You hold tighter, I push away
But what if I promised you that I would stay
What if you hold me to it
What if if trying takes all my strength to do it

What if the weight is crushing us
Is it a promise that you want to keep
Is obligation enough for you
A rope, a chain, and at best just half of me

What if there was no chain
What if I could move and breathe and grow
What if my path is more of a meander
What if I ebb away from you
but then turned and came back closer

If you gave me freedom, would I still want it?
If I did not, would you want a promise in my place?
