A Promise Fulfilled Poem by Daniel Brick

A Promise Fulfilled

Rating: 5.0

I made a promise...
as I stood within the tourists
and families. The plain was wide
and evenly lit by everyone's Sun.
The a cool breeze turned my head,
as two hands held my face, gently, gently.

I made a promise...
in a solitude of my mind.
Sound was reduced to animal scuffings,
frequent laughter, directions given,
birds in their evening concerts. All of it.
ordinary, and all of it a marvel, a marvel.

I made a promise...
I whispered it within the hearing
of immense red rocks being relentlessly
ground into dust by wind, and water,
and sun. They will hold my promise
secret, but not forever.

I made a promise...
A crowd of people was there, the wind
and light were there, perhaps invisible
ones were there, and time was there,
measuring out our lives in gusts of breath.
Then the cool breeze swept by again.

I made a promise...
Your smiling face almost brought
tears to my eyes, but then I recovered
my poise before any of them fell.
And I watched your face, with clear vision,
in all of its permutations over time.

The promise has been fulfilled.
It wasn't as hard as I thought:
over time it became one of my
good habits, and I could concentrate
on other things. And now when I see
your face, it is always smiling.

I was feeling the need to read a Daniel Brick poem so I picked the newest poem you had posted and settled in to hear the beauty I knew would be inherent in...... A Promise Fulfilled....... HA! .... What an Apt title- -your writings always fulfill their promise. You just never disappoint. This poem was an excursion through words, exquisite words, mysterious words, words that yearn, words that whisper in the back of our mind trying to share the truths about life. I want to read this Haunting Beautiful Piece over and over and over for the rest of my life. Thank you, Daniel, for being a member of PoemHunters. You add so much excellence to this site. A 10 of course! Wish we could give millions of stars, A 10 seems so paltry!

Thanks very much Susan! ! I had to do this one over from scratch THREE times to get the pattern and the repetitions and the imagery - Well, you get the point! And something puzzling occurs: I forgot to type a twp-letter word in stanza one, and that omission changes the whole poem! ! But maybe the poem thinks that word didn't belong and made me miss it? Did the poem correct itself? Or do I need to go back and restore the missing word? What shall I do? ?

Daniel, I am going nuts trying to solve the mystery of the missing two letter word. All I can come up with is: I made ME a promise... It makes sense but the word is also missing from the other stanzas. Try as I may I cannot see where a 2 letter word would go...... message me please and put me out of my misery. I suspect you might be better off leaving it out in that I don't think your readers are going to miss it but if it changes the message of the poem.... my goodness you have a hard choice. Maybe type up A Promise Fulfilled 2nd Version and let readers read and compare and comment and perhaps by what they say you will know what to do. In the meantime I go back to trying to stuff 2 letter words in that stanza....... go, me, my, by, so, am, at, to, we....... .

Daniel, let the two letter word, mystically hide behind the curtain of that special promise, it intrigues the mind silently, yet poetically leaving us wanting more. Enjoying how it's giving rise to so many ideas and comments, ingenious even if not done purposely. Your muse knew to leave it out, I believe. RoseAnn

Promises of time, given by a poet deep within the labyrinth of life, contemplating what has gone before him without bitterness nor regret, but hopeful and looking forward to the future of time's promises with a smile in his heart and poetical mind. Yet not once is a promise divulged, it's kept in a hidden mystery all his own. Such a beautiful and profound poem that enlightens our minds so sublimely, yet fully! Thank you so much Daniel for sharing this awesome poem! Welcome back, my friend, you were sorely missed! 10+++++++++++++++++++ RoseAnn

Different moments of life beautifully captured, each moment marked by a promise that the poet keeps to himself and the reader is thoroughly in the grip of mystery. To see life through the prism of promise n fulfillment makes this poem such a special one. The poem shows Time passing by, finally culminating into fulfillment. The transience of Time gives no bitterness as it climaxes into contentment brought by a sense of promise kept. No regrets, no pain...only peace surrounds the heart that has done its duty by others. Great write.10

A promise fulfilled leaves one with a mystery. You fulfilled a promise in a public space that is wide open, well known and regarded space that is full of people tourists and families...a space that is happy as these people are shining in the sun...you made a promise to a person that is intimate enough to hold your face in their hands...and direct you to SEE something? What are you looking at? What are you doing there? You are neither a tourist nor with a family there...so why? The promise is contained there but not forever...what will you be revealing? Is this the beginning of a story? The person you made the promise too is someone who has been a part of your life's history...permutations of time. I would imagine this person is no longer living...but I don't really know. Promise me you will explain this one! :)
