A White Experience Poem by Cynthia Buhain-baello

A White Experience

The beeping sound gave one steady tone
And as I turned to look, my own heart failed.
His countenance a deathly white had shown
The spirit's gone and his mortal eyes were veiled.

A moment's panic gripped and turned my body numb
Unbelief and grieving thoughts held all I'm witnessing
Departing soul as the body to its Death succumbs
T'was like a part of me was there with him, dying.

A brief breath of eternal passage flowed through me
All I could see was brightest white in awesome silence,
Then one word was said in earnest Faith maybe
I said 'Jesus Christ' and came upon His Presence.

Then all was back, like the beep was just a minute late,
My brother gasped one breath and was back to life
But at that moment the patient next to him had died
The wife gave out one wail that pierced us like a knife.

Death had taken him instead,
he passed through me on his way inside.
