a2 + b2 = c2 Poem by Glenn Colquhoun

a2 + b2 = c2

In the local supermarket
a man travels north

between the canned
goods and the sugar;

in his basket:

skin,
bone,
doubt,

mayonnaise
and
candles.

His heart is a small red tin.

A woman passes west
to test the fruit;

in her trolley:

potatoes,
matches,
lipstick,

loneliness
and
danger.

Between these two -
a shared hypotenuse:

flesh and blood,

hope,
potato salad
and candlelight.
