Absence At Home Poem by Nika McGuin

Absence At Home

Hush! Stupid memories
Hush! I don't need you
to remind me
of what used to be
or how it used to be
when I got home,
what used to await me,
who no longer does

I needn't you,
the lingering absence
or the insistent silence

it's hard enough forgetting
it's harder still, remembering

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

The title already prepares us for the content. And the urgency of the speaker's language with the self-interrupted phrases, and irritated interjections, all point to something which is unwelcome no matter which way you turn. And home is supposed to above these problems, houses have problems, not homes. Homes are sacred and protected.
