Absent Presence Poem by Mihaela Pirjol

Absent Presence

Rating: 5.0

Horizon painted in sorrow…
Slowly
Vanishing the red as a colour.
It is the finished hour,
The sunset of an ardent love,
The extinction of a heart
Which has bled too deeply,
As the root of love
Prematurely ceased its growth:
It is the very existence of it,
The unforgettable mark
Impregnated in memory
And unaltered by time.
The sunset red is sinking now,
Immersing in the ocean's depths;
With mine emotions in crepuscule,
Expectantly, I linger still…
My night is coming:
Deeper and darker;
Profoundly and mysteriously
My soul
Reflected clearly up above,
In the lunar silver-ball:
Full and static
Yet, in a vibrant move.
In its shadows grey,
My lover's face…serene, I distinguish;
It seems that always have been there
Looking down at me:
Everlastingly
Nocturnal omnipresence!
In its absent presence,
Fevered with emotions
And unashamed of my heart's nudity,
I reveal to it my deepest secrets:
My intimacy of thoughts,
In a fusion of understanding, we converse.
In stellar light surrounded,
I lie embraced in its inert touch:
My sphere crystalline,
Cradling my soul to dreaming
Serenely…blissfully…
Beatitude in celestial harmony
For soul purification!
Until tomorrow night,
When it will appear again
Upon firmament amongst the constellations,
With only eyes for me…
My lovely, absent company!

In the last 30 lines of this poem (I counted them!) you give us an extended metaphor of the MOON as the beloved or rather what you call his ABSENT COMPANY. I love the extravagance of this passage! The whole-hearted way you embrace this metaphor and derive from a monologue affirming the sincerity of the speaker, her worthiness for love, her absolute commitment. I have used lunar imagery in my love poems as you know, but I am always so cautious, I restrain the consequences it implies. That's another personal reason why these 30 lines affect me so deeply. You OPEN THE INNER EXPERIENCE of love, and it is a wonder. And yet this is a poem of anticipation rather than fulfillment, a poem of readiness rather experience. The medieval troubadours who shaped our concept of romantic love acording to Joseph Campbell this love of an absent beloved L'AMOUR DE LOIN Love from afar and considered it the purest test of true love. Which shows how deeply embedded in our nature is the love you celebrate. This poem will resonate in me, will grow in me.
