Acquired Loving Taste Poem by David Thomas

Acquired Loving Taste

Rating: 2.7

When i was ready for love,
i was a young lad
in a strapping young world
full of promise and muse
years flew by like minutes
the times and people i knew
had gone and grown right up
out of whatever it is i do
standing in a river of concrete
rushing out of earth
the anti-gravity meteor
spearing somewhere in another horizon
love had betrayed me.

now at eight past teen
with a tattered shirt with torn sleeves
and pants with pockets as to hold
all of those things that will never
matter as much as your hand did in mine,
but i see now living up to your word
unlike legos and poetry
is not something naturally easy
for this particular man, if any,
and looking back at what i had
and all of the times i could have held onto
you...
i see what i must say
makes the difference very clear,
love never betrayed a soul
it was I that betrayed love,
and for that reason i have suffered
so as to never make that choice again.

cross my heart and hope to live,
i won't say goodnight and goodbye
until i know in my heart that you
are safer than the sun in our skies,
may you never fall nor rise
but always be at your same
epic balance with life,
i'll hold onto you from up there
or i'll push you from down below,
may you always soar
in the place without limits
above all the rest.
