After The Burning Of The House Poem by RIC BASTASA

After The Burning Of The House

we've been to such situations as

a house burning with no fireman coming despite
our screams for help,

that day when an old woman walked straight to the sea
and drowned herself and the waves took her in
gladly

while we simply watched
how even fold and unfold

when we do not cease
when we flowed with the surge of the big river

when everything turned dark and silent
when we wake up

and see all the curious people asking as
what really happened
