An Annoying Buzz! Poem by Pushpinder Kaur

An Annoying Buzz!

An annoying buzz!

Chasing a tiny little house-fly
Can be a pain, unimaginable-
An annoyance,
Beyond tolerance-
Especially, when we are
no longer used to having them in our midst.

An uneventful occurrence,
the house being infested by the flies
In Dubai, on the 9th floor…
is an event most lamentable!
How did these creatures
reach up to the 9th floor?
Did they come in the lift?
Through the Balcony?
Through the exhaust fans?
What could be the source of their entry? -
becomes a question unanswerable-

Is it the breeding season?
Was a cluster of eggs laid in the house-
which led to such an outburst of the flies?

My son's conjecture-
"It is all the packets of food brought by you all from India! "-
"It is a gift of the recent trip to India- surely-
there was a filthy cluster of eggs in them-
so our house has become their breeding ground! "

My god, what a venture every day, chasing them
With a roll of newspaper tightly rolled up in hand,
Or standing guard with the flyswatter in hand-

I have knocked out nearly 50 today…
Another 50 today…
Now, just a few left-
(Does that make me a murderer?
A serial killer?)
Oh my god, here comes another one,
And another…
There… many more-
There seems to be no end.

The little pickings on the arms, face and legs
Cause such an awful exasperation;
An endless interruption to the peaceful sleep.
Closing all the curtains of the room
Is nothing but a vain attempt to block out their entry!

Alas, now there seems to be
Some respite- the battle won-
Oh no, here comes another, happily buzzing around!
Oh, the awful shadow, as the tiny wings
Block out the early morning sun rays…
A shadow, which is as much a reality
As of now-
As myself, and this shadow of my hand!

The little creature
Is the self-same tyrant that led the slave to chop off the King's nose!
The self-same creature that I took such pains to draw in the Zoology Register,
Registering every tiny line in the tiny wings, until there emerged
a beautiful replica!

Oh, why did God create this buzz?
Leaves the mind in an angry fuzz!
