An Anti War Song Poem by Francis Duggan

An Anti War Song

All around the World war is raging and the mother grieves for her dead son
And what did the poor fellow die for as nothing is solved by the gun?
No bombs and guns don't solve a problem they only make the problem worse
The lust for land and power and money on us human kind is a curse.

For nine months she carried that baby and into manhood him she raised
And her whole life it revolved around him and his every achievement she praised
She did not want him to die in this way and that he died under fire she doesn't take pride
The hopes and the dreams she had for him by one single bullet destroyed

I don't hate those who declare war it's what they do stand for I hate
And it saddens me when people look up to them and see them as special and great
How can a young man die for freedom when he throws his gift of life away
I'd rather live on to an old age and leave the reaper have his say.

We've heard of the war to end all wars but that was fought a long time ago
And still young people die for what reason and the numbers of the war dead grow
They tell us they died for our freedom But I did not wish them to die
I can't travel without a passport should I believe them when they lie

For her son the mother is grieving what use to her if he died brave
If the army general gives the oration and they play the last post at his grave?
You may not agree with what I'm saying and see this as an anti war song
But don't deny me of my opinion when I say that all wars have been wrong
