An Invocation For My Wife And My Life Poem by Gert Strydom

An Invocation For My Wife And My Life

Probably angels did on the day with joy sing,
when the first time you opened your eyes.
It was like an unwearyingly eternal spring,
the world had sun-filled clear skies,
where you did joy and heartache to me bring
but offered to me one of the saddest goodbyes

and you are jerked from me as if by a fatal blow,
in a time where I know victory and great defeat,
where Daleen, your true self at heart I do know
and our love and life is both bitter-sweet
and yet I pray that God do on you goodwill bestow
where without you all of my life is incomplete

and I call on all that is holy, to hear me,
now broken is that invisible soul-chord
that was destined to bind you and me to eternity,
I call on You my divine omnipotent Lord,
return her, You destined for me, if it Your will be,
please remove all pain, hurt and any discord.

I come to You with my own great incompetence,
where possibility to You has an unbarred extent;
in a way this prayer portrays my guilt and innocence,
where I ask forgiveness and do not just pretend
and call to You to be against darkness my sole defence,
where You bring forth life and love in each firmament.

Do again her heart with kindness and love for me fill,
but much more with greater devotion to You
and I know that You will not act against her will,
but to righteousness and great mercy You are true,
I know that in her heart there is love for me still
and what is in our best interest You will do.

You have been my own close companion from birth,
please do for You greater love in me induct,
let your will be done in heaven, the universe and earth,
help me where great evil does my way obstruct,
I ask for restoration and not for mirth,
even if you have your arch-angels to instruct.

To You belong space, time and every kind of place;
I beg for forgiveness, my Lord, You know me well
and in Your image You created the human race,
I ask You to break every incantation and each spell
and still You are full of goodwill, love, mercy and grace;
I ask You to act in my life against the forces of hell,

please be my companion in a time of strive,
I am unworthy and full of incompetence,
restore Your image in all of my life,
take away from me a failing pretence
and if it's Your will return to me a loving wife,
I ask that You do act in Your omnipotence.

To You become all that is pure, true and holy,
Yours is compassion and love that do people move,
Your scope is from eternity to eternity
and nothing can Your kindness, mercy and love remove,
as You think and speak things are deemed to be,
all of creation does Your great care proof,
I thank You, for taking care of me.

Amen.
