And I Wonder Why Poem by Koffi B Sossou

And I Wonder Why

Rating: 4.0

And I wonder why
I still wonder why so many Richard Corys?
Pure and happy soul they may say;
Wealthy and privileged they sing
Until you see a Richard Cory.
Why so many Richard Corys in the Army, in the Navy, in the Marines,
In the Military?
A happy face you see today,
And tears you shed tomorrow
Richard Cory has pressed the trigger again!
And I wonder why?
Give yourself a chance Richard Cory.
Tomorrow can be brighter, trust me.

Thanks, Koffi, for the Poet's Notes. I'd heard the poem before now and I knew the ending. I assume you are addressing as Richard Cory, people with other names, esp. in the military. (cont.)

Suicide increases daily in the military. 'Cory' here stands for the desperate and the traumatized in the military who suffer often times in silence and chose death to life. I want to give them hope. It is hard but death is not the solution. Thank you for your input. I really appreciate it.

The entire establishment known as "MILITARY" is superfluous and unnecessary. Each nation spends a large part of us income for military establishment and weapons. Who benefits from this? None but the ruling community (Contd)

Unfortunately, there will always be a military. But we can at least fight trauma and depression to eradicate suicide. By so doing, Richard Cory will no more be.

2) but, they succeed in fleecing the citizens by higher taxes, in the name of patriotism. The common man is befooled by them. I live for a day, when all the borders vanish and the Indian philosophy of "Vasudhaiva Kudumbakam" is promoted

OK, I've just read your poem again, and I'm wondering: 'Why didn't I give it FIVE STARS? ? ' I'll now send it to my FAVORITES, if I can, as I cannot change the # of stars I gave it.
