As A Child Poem by Hasan Haskovic

As A Child

Given time, as a child, unaware
I took the moment to relish in the gift of sentience
Everything sublime, everyone smiled, everywhere
Nothing seemed to hold any relevance

Everything was free for the taking
The world grand and breathtaking
Life was for the living
As long as you could keep on breathing

I am afraid in times thing slowly came to a pause
Awareness became another burden carried on the chest
Years passed by in thorough searching for the cause
In sifting through emotions which have been repressed
Not sure where I went wrong
The idea was to play along, play along

Baptized in murder of innocence
Solemn I stand before you today
In a world filled with beligerents
And systems that are doomed to decay
I know not the secret of my success
I guess I just do my best
To earn my keep, and my rest

Given opportunity, as a child, uncertain
I would question the persistence of reality
Look behind every scene for a curtain
To drop and cover up the dissimilarity
In which I live to this hour

I didn't know where it struck at first
Soon enough I realized my path was reversed
Returning back became an objective
Just for me to check the change of perspective

I tried, I really tried
But in the end the answer was denied
The plea unheard and since I've swirved
Never finding myself again

Help me, if you can
Help me devise God's plan
Help me find where it began

And save the answers for when I become a man
