Asleep? Poem by Edwina Reizer

Asleep?

Are you asleep or feigning it?
I should be able to tell.
But your quiet even breathing
has fooled me oh so well.

I cannot see behind your eyes
and what it is that's there.
You look so peaceful next to me
as if you have no care.

Are you content in our bed
or restless in your mind?
Do I need to worry at all
that someday I will find

that behind your dreamy appearance
you lie there wide-awake?
I'm afraid to touch you now.
I fear your sleep is fake.

And if you're troubled in our bed
what is it I must do?
Please let it be peaceful slumber
that has come to you.

Am I asleep or feigning it?
I do not wish to tell.
For without you lying next to me
this bed's a living hell.
