Autumn Poem by Alex Nystrom

Autumn

It's autumn again
This time of year I dread
The trees all look dead
The leaves turn orange and red
Like the color of rust
Seems like there's rust on my brain
Can't get out of this state of mind
I try to remind myself that everyone can't be the same
Be the pine tree in a field of oaks
The one green leaf on an autumn tree
Not a boring red leaf colored like a brick
Be the pumpkin that nobody picks
At least that pumpkin will never get homesick
People look at you like a lunatic
Hold your ground
Like that forgotten pumpkin
Or that leaf pile you have to jump in
Or you can be just another orange leaf
Floating in the wind
In the dead of autumn
On an October evening
Watching a scary movie and screaming
And realizing
You're not that different from the monster on the screen
At least that's how you feel on the inside
Wanting to attempt suicide
And your tears dried
Because you looked to the side
Out the window
And saw a green leaf in October
And remembered a good metaphor
To be the only green leaf on a tree full of red ones
And if that's you, you finally won
