Awakening Depression Poem by Mackenzie Scholte

Awakening Depression

Rating: 5.0

She crawls out slowly,
so slowly you don't see her coming,
From the very pit of your stomach
She makes herself at home inside you
The space between your lungs her playground,
She lives in your chest
feeding off your thoughts
letting your steps lull her to sleep,
but when you stand still
her silky voice whispers through your mind
'You're not good enough,
Don't try anymore...
Just give up...'
So you tell yourself to just keep walking,
put her to sleep,
But she lives in your chest
playing in the space between your lungs
and feeding off your thoughts
so when you stop, she knows
and she awakens
slithering through your mind...

Good analogy of the serpent-like presence of dark moods and feelings. Also powerful image of the depression-monster feeding on thoughts. Vivid expression.
