Better People Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

I want to do better.
So I work on doing that,
The best I can.
Regardless if it's known I'm trying.
Regardless if no one understands.

I prove what I can do.
More for myself than anyone else.
And this I will admit,
I want to achieve the unexpected.
Since there may be someone else,
Who accepts...
Others who suspect,
Neither one of us...
Will achieve nothing at all.
With a want to do less of that better.

And I want to do better
So I work on doing just that.
With the doing of it the best I can.
And...
Well,
Maybe I do this also for you too.
Maybe one day you will want this too.
Just to prove you can do this for me.

And...
Hmmm.
Maybe there will come a day,
We will be found competing with each other.
Just to prove to ourselves,
Which one of us can become...
Better people.
To show it done.

And...
Making others jealous.
Wanting themselves to compete!
Wouldn't that make all of us,
Doing the best we can to be better.
