Big Things Come In Small Packages Poem by Elizabeth Sheaffer

Big Things Come In Small Packages

She lay in the hospital bed, small and frightened
Her parents sat by, gripping her tiny hands
The doctor came through the door in his pristine white coat
No signs of corruption in him, oh no
'The test results are in, ' he said with a grim smile
'Could you step outside, ma'am? '
Her mother kissed her hand, smiling reassurance
'I'll only be a second, honey, I promise'
Out the door, closing it behind them
All smiles and reassurance gone
'I'm afraid I've got some terrible news;
the test results are very grave.
Your daughter won't make it through the night.'
A single tear slid down her cheek
She'd always feared the worst
Nodding helplessly, she went back in
Her heart troubled, and heavy with sorrow
Taking her daughter's hand again
As the others left them alone
A small kiss on her feverish forehead
'Try to get some sleep little angel...
I'll see you in the morning.'
